Who needs a boating licence

If you were born on 1 January 1980 or later, you need a boating licence to drive a Norwegian recreational boat under 15 metres that

  • is longer than 8 metres, or
  • has an engine of more than 25 hp (19 kW).

You can take the test from the age of 14, and the licence is issued when you turn 16.

What the test covers

The syllabus has four parts. In our translation: 1 seamanship, 2 laws and rules, 3 navigation and chart reading, and 4 especially important topics. Part 4 includes navigation marks, chart symbols, who must keep out of the way, navigation lights and emergencies. Some questions use four training charts (skolekart), which you can download free as a PDF.

The official syllabus is on Sjøfartsdirektoratet's website, in Norwegian.
